City Mystic Tries a Hand at Poker

Hi friends and family! How’s your wily spring going? Bumpy? Action-backed? Full of change? Good. You’re right on track! The Earth is rumbling and lots of movement is being stirred up… we are in GO-mode for sure I’ve been on my own wild ride of shifting and propelling forward which has agitated so much creative juice for me. I am so thankful, and feeling very inspired. I’ve been wanting to tackle a secondary City Mystic • New York project for a while, but the time hasn’t been right until now. While I gear up for City Mystic • Paris  (which, its important to mention, really needs YOU to come to fruition! Click to see the GoFundMe campaign going on right now to raise funds for the final push to make the Paris shoot happen! So close!!!) coming Fall this year, I am also going through the images I shot for the original NYC deck and decided I have simply too many beloved images that never had a chance to appear in the Tarot deck. This made me sad, so I said forget that noise, I’m making a second deck, darn it! And alas, that’s what I’ve been working on! I’m in the process of crafting 12 totally new, never-before seen cards for the next City Mystic • New York Poker Card Deck, and this time they aren’t constrained to the meanings of Tarot… they’re adorning the faces of my first standard Poker deck!!! While the court cards will remain the same, I’m bringing in some fun new images while staying true to that CMNY core we’ve all come...

Temperance- Making Art of Life

Where does the time go? Life pulls to and fro at our attention spans and all we can do is our best to stick with the initial thread. I am SO feeling this pearl of wisdom in reference to blogging! To be fair, the last three months have been as monumentally busy as ever for us around here at the Jester/Hopkins household… new career advances, changes in living situation, developments in City Mystic • Paris…  So much is going on that we are in the midst of the birth of a new phase of our lives. But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. All the changes we’re experiencing now really began in 2013 and 2014. In 2014 I went through my personal year of Temperance- a lesson of putting what I’ve learned to practice, merging fire and water, keeping my attention tuned in my chosen directions. City Mystic • New York was born in that lesson. Art came to life and I am still amazed when I have a moment to reflect on it all that it actually came together. Its not to say that I didn’t believe in the project- I have always been a person of the ‘big ideas’ category. Some of those ideas come to fruition, some don’t. I’ve learned to roll with it, and accept that some things come into my awareness with a sense that they are ‘meant to be’, and others don’t. A sort of balancing act is required with ideas and creativity- a release from a need to force things coupled with a drive to make them so- no matter how uncomfortable at...

Learn to Read ANY Tarot Deck at ANY Level- Free Tutorial

No experience reading Tarot? NO PROBLEM! This mini-lesson is enough to get you started, AND to get your own personal key of meanings in development for you to build a robust reading practice on. Every other Tuesday I co-teach Tarot Techniques with Mindy Galloway at the Enchanted Tree Organization. We facilitate an eclectic group of readers at various levels of Tarot experience in a lesson and reading exchange most sessions. It helps to get the readings flowing with some basic understandings or relationships with the cards, so I put this little video together for folks who might want to attend but don’t yet have a strong understanding of the card meanings just yet. No matter where you are in the world, if you’re planning on attending a Tarot Techniques session or not, this video was designed with the beginning Tarot enthusiast in...

Midnight Yerba Buena

Hi everyone! Life wrapped her tentacles around me and tugged me to and fro- the holidays, my family, City Mystic shipments, and my birthday have all kept my hands busy and away from the keyboard. Speaking of birthdays, the following gallery is a series I’m working on with the working title Midnight Yerba Buena, a night photography project from my favorite tiny, hidden parks in San Francisco. Naturally, when Chris or I mention City Mystic • New York to someone they usually ask why we haven’t started with San Francisco. Its a valid question, and here are my two answers: 1. Its important to us, to me especially, to focus the lens on cities strongly steeped in Occult architecture, practice and culture. San Francisco carries this, but she is very new. Paris, London, Prague… these are more magically intriguing to me in that way. But of course, San Francisco is beautiful, and incredibly photogenic. I was born and raised there, which brings me to answer #2. All my shit is in San Francisco. My first concert. My first crush. My first love. My first art show. The first time I got arrested. The first time I stripped. The first time I snorted drugs. The first time I got my heart broken. My first car accident. My shit. Naturally, the task of removing my own emotional identifications of the city long enough to craft an inclusively relatable tarot deck seems more than daunting at this point. Perhaps when I have a few decks under my belt I’ll have built a deep enough groove to settle into on the Meta level...

Real Life Witch School- An Interview with Urban Goddess, Author of Path of the Witch

Hi Friends! This fall I’ve been infused with a much-needed magickal re-awakening. Over the last few years in my Tarot work I took a necessary intellectual turn on my path as I learned, studied, practiced and researched the nuts and bolts of Tarot; history, methodologies, reading systems, practices… you name it! I was on an adventure of Tarot understanding in a worldly sense so that I could better communicate the abstract feelings I had about Tarot to the world at large, no matter what the background or experience level of the person I might be speaking with. Having a Libra moon in the third house conjunct Pluto, I receive a deep joy from thick research that I’ve come to understand is somewhat unique. Give me a pile of the right Occult encyclopedias and history books, a few days to myself, a box of tea bags and some easily-prepared food, and I might just come quite close to one (of many) version of my own heaven-on-Earth experience. It fills me up emotionally, as ironic as that sounds, and over the course of the last three years I am thankful that I’ve had such heavenly, full experiences on multiple occasions. After pouring all that knowledge and research into something as tangible as a Tarot deck, I found shortly after the close of our Kickstarter campaign that I was craving a new round of personal, interior magickal work and study. Throughout the month of October I could feel the call in my bones and knew somehow or other a renewal was coming, though I had no idea from where in the physical world....

Introducing Tarot Tuesdays Sacramento!

Meet my new friend, Mindy Galloway   Writer, teacher, lover of magik and seeker of the unknown. Mindy is an intuitive tarot reader who believes tarot can be used for divining, meditation, life progression and healing. As a teacher and student of the tarot, Mindy has been working with the tarot for over 10 years and still loves constantly learning and finding new ways to connect with the cards. She strives to inspire others by sharing her experiences and lessons on her blog The Pure Ritual (www.thepureritual.com). I met Mindy back at the start of 2013 when I read at my first Indie Craft fair here in Sacramento. It was a lovely turn of events to run back into her almost two years later at the Enchanted Tree, run by Joy Curlette A.K.A. Urban Goddess (whom I’ll be interviewing for the blog about her vision and her new book on Thursday) here in Sacramento, CA. I met Joy recently at a Divination party thrown by another new, and wonderful, soul friend, SunWolf- artist, maker and uber psychic Sha[wo]man (the latter is my own assessment of her- seriously, psychic!). Joy was at the Divination party to share a short version of her very intriguing Tarot intensive workshop. I loved her wonderfully intuitive approach to the Tarot and she made me think about the suit of water in a totally new way which I really appreciated. Chris and I went to the party check out SunWolf’s line of *gorgeous* Tarot cloths and bags (check out her Etsy shop,  Sacred Collection ). In many ways that night changed innumerable things in our lives. Plus,...

City Mystic • New York Featured in Tarosophist International

This month we had the incredible honor of having City Mystic • New York featured in the Autumn volume of Tarosophist International, a renowned international Tarot magazine published by Tarot Professionals in the UK. We were so surprised to see such a gorgeous, full spread dedicated to our indie Tarot deck. New York has a magick that just seems to want to speak to people. Its quite an experience witnessing the life of its own this project is taking on! Not only were we featured in a spread about up and coming decks, but we were doubly honored to find that we were featured on their “50 Essential Decks” list! Thrilling doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling of looking through the magazine and finding CMNY there. This is such an exciting leg of the journey! Thanks to this list, so many more people are finding CMNY and falling in love with it all over the world. Our local postal workers are quite close to knowing us on a first name basis, thanks to these articles, as we are there almost daily with shipments to distribute the world over.         From February until now, Chris and I have been working without cease on this project, and we had no idea we’d come this far by this point. We are thankful to our friends and family, our children, our backers, our supporters, and our contacts for carrying us down the river of this creative process. Being a member of Tarot Professionals as a reader, I am most excited to be a part of something which I feel is...

Top Three Favorite Tarot Decks

Since we’re talking so much about Tarot decks lately with the production of City Mystic • New York complete and shipping around the world, I thought it might be useful to tell you more about my personal top 3 favorite Tarot decks. More often than not I use these for personal readings since these days I almost exclusively read with CMNY. I’ve chosen decks that have expanded my awareness, understanding and lens of Tarot. These are the decks I find myself turning to when I need a bit of a change of pace, or when I’m interested in learning more about Tarot beyond the typical Rider-Waite deck. Klimt Tarot Tarot of the Boroughs Xultun Tarot What are some of your personal favorite decks to turn to, to assist in your growth, or to pour over? See you next time! Ginnie...
